About us - Orton Village

Orton is a relatively undiscovered village just 20 minutes drive from Penrith, Gateway to the Northern & Western Lakes and Kendal, Gateway to the Southern lakes. Orton has excellent access to the M6 (junctions 38 & 39) The fellwalker's writer Alfred Wainwright, at one tome considered living here and it was undoubtably one of his favourite villages. In his book "Westmorland's Heritage" he writes:

"Orton is one of the loveliest of Westmorland's villages, a delightful rural settlement built around a central green and two streams crossed by many footbridges and having numerous venerable buildings and a fine church on a hill overlooking tranquil countryside"

 About us - Orton Hall

The Jacobean mansion of Orton Hall is believed to date from 1662 and is a Grade II Listed Building. In more recent times this imposing property has been sympathetically renovated and converted whilst retaining superb oak panelling, stone mullioned windows and open fire places. the oak pannelled walls are a particular feature of Orton Hall and greatly contribute to the overall atmosphere of historic grandeur which permeates the property.

The apartment has been created from the front reception rooms in this magnificent mansion, and was named after Oliver Cromwell who is reputed to have stayed in the village during a march northwards into Scotland during the course of the English Civil War. It is approached from the superbly pannelled main Reception hall, and the living room is graciously appointed , with a most striking carved fireplace. You are entitled to use the magnificent central hall. There is an en-suite principal bedroom, and fully fitted kitchen.

In addition to the apartment, visitors have free use of additional facilities including The Great Hall, Laundry Room, Cellars and grounds.

The surrounding grounds extend to approximately 6.5 acres and offer unrestricted access. They are managed and comprise formal period lawns with fine trees. Some more "wilderness" areas act as a nature reserve and home red squirrels, roe deer and interesting wildlife.
